Supporting our local community is a core value here at Flatirons Bank, and our employees were able to put that value into action recently with a volunteer day with Community Food Share. This holiday season, the need is greater than ever. Our employees packed fresh fruits and vegetables in bags for their Mobile Pantry program, which meets folks in need where they are.
About Community Food Share
Community Food Share was founded in 1981 with a mission to end hunger in Boulder and Broomfield Counties by providing access to fresh, nutritious food through local partners and onsite and mobile pantries.1 Having distributed over 217 million meals since its inception, they have grown to be able to distribute over 30,000 meals each day consisting of nutrient-dense foods. They actively support over 18,000 individuals in our local area and rescue 11 tons of food each day that would otherwise go to waste. (In CU Buffs terms, that's over 11 Ralphies!)1
Not only do they receive donations from local stores and farms, but they also own a local farm where they work to provide even more produce during the summer months.
Their Mobile Pantry program, launched in 2002, has grown from one location to a network of permanent and pop-up locations. They operate with a mix of walk-up and drive-up styles to allow our neighbors to receive food in whatever way works best for them.1
Flatirons Bank in Action
Volunteers make up 25% of all hours worked at Community Food Share, resulting in labor cost savings of over $950,000.1 Flatirons Bank was proud to be included in these impressive stats with our support. Using our company's Volunteer Paid Time Off, employees packed apples, acorn squash, and chili peppers into 200 bags to be included in the many items given out at the Mobile Food Pantry.
"Spending the day packing fresh produce for Community Food Share was incredibly rewarding. Knowing that our efforts will directly help families in need across Boulder and Broomfield Counties made it even more meaningful. At Flatirons Bank, we believe in supporting our local community, and volunteering allowed us to truly live our values," said volunteer David Kinney – Flatirons Bank Chief Banking Officer and Board Member at Community Food Share.
Once all the bags were packed, we were treated to a tour of the warehouse and saw inside the operations of this incredible nonprofit. The operational organization and sheer quantity of food goods waiting to reach local folks in need were inspiring. Nothing goes to waste; fruits and vegetables that are no longer fresh are donated to local pig farmers.
